God’s Power and Presence During Hard Times
by Pastor Tina Andino
We all face difficult seasons—times of trials, sorrow, and uncertainty. The Bible never promises a life free from hardships. In fact, James 1:2-4 gives us a powerful perspective shift:
“When troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.”
What a mindset change! Trials are not setbacks; they are opportunities for growth.
Now, I want to be clear—I am not making light of the struggles we face. Some trials are deeply painful. We all have walked through seasons of hardship. But even in those moments, we can trust that God is with us and working for our good.
Jesus’ Promise in Trials
Before His crucifixion, Jesus prepared His disciples for what was to come. He spoke about His departure, the coming of the Holy Spirit, and the sorrow that would turn to joy. Then He made this promise:
“I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” — John 16:33
No situation is impossible for God. He has already overcome the world!
God’s Presence in Every Trial
Troubles come in all forms—spiritual, emotional, physical, financial, relational. No matter the size or type of struggle, one truth remains:
“God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.” — Psalm 46:1
Other translations call Him an “ever-present help in times of need.” God is not distant during our struggles—He is near.
Fixing Our Eyes on Jesus Brings Peace
Isaiah 26:3 gives us this assurance:
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in You.”
When we focus on Jesus, rather than our circumstances, fears, or human solutions, we can experience peace that surpasses all understanding.
A Promise and Provision in Every Problem
Graham Cooke once said:
“Whenever we have a problem, there is a promise and a provision.”
So when challenges arise, instead of asking, “How can I fix this?” ask:
“God, what is Your promise in this situation?”
Hold on to His truth and trust that He will provide everything you need.
A Testimony of God’s Faithfulness
During hard times in my own life where I had to lean completely on God’s promises. Whether the trial seems big or small, every challenge is an opportunity to seek God, trust His Word, and witness His power.
God’s Power and Presence in Exodus
To deepen this understanding, let’s look at the story of Moses and the Israelites in Exodus.
The Israelites’ Oppression in Egypt
The Israelites had once thrived in Egypt, but after Joseph’s time, a new Pharaoh arose who didn’t know Joseph or his family. Fearful of their growing numbers, he enslaved them, ordering:
“We must make a plan to keep them from growing even more. If we don’t, and if war breaks out, they will join our enemies and fight against us. Then they will escape from the country.” — Exodus 1:10
Yet God’s blessing remained on His people. Even in oppression, they multiplied and grew stronger.
The enemy’s attacks can never stop God’s plans!
God’s Deliverance Begins
Pharaoh ordered the killing of all Hebrew baby boys (Exodus 1:22), but God had already prepared a deliverer—Moses.
Moses’ mother hid him for three months and then placed him in a basket on the Nile River. Pharaoh’s own daughter found him, adopted him, and raised him as her son (Exodus 2).
From the beginning, God’s hand was on Moses.
Moses Encounters God
Years later, God appeared to Moses in a burning bush and declared:
“I have certainly seen the oppression of My people. I have heard their cries and I am aware of their suffering. So I have come down to rescue them…” — Exodus 3:7-8
Moses doubted himself, but God assured him repeatedly:
“I will be with you.” — Exodus 3:12
God also gave miraculous signs to confirm His power, yet Moses still resisted, saying:
“Lord, I am not good with words… I get tongue-tied.” — Exodus 4:10
But God had already made a way. He appointed Aaron to speak for Moses, proving again that He equips those He calls.
When Deliverance Makes Things Worse
Moses and Aaron obeyed God and confronted Pharaoh, asking for the Israelites’ release. Instead of freedom, Pharaoh increased their workload, making their suffering worse (Exodus 5:6-9).
The Israelites became discouraged, blaming Moses and questioning God’s plan. Even Moses struggled, asking:
“Lord, why have You brought this trouble on Your people? Ever since I came to Pharaoh, things have only gotten worse.” — Exodus 5:22-23
But God’s promise had not changed. Sometimes, things look worse before they get better.
God’s Faithfulness in Action
God responded with bold assurance:
“Now you will see what I will do to Pharaoh. He will force you to leave his land!” — Exodus 6:1
Despite Pharaoh’s resistance, God displayed His power through plagues and miracles.
The Red Sea Miracle
When Pharaoh finally let them go, he quickly changed his mind and chased after them with an army of chariots. The Israelites panicked (Exodus 14:10-12).
Yet Moses boldly declared:
“Don’t be afraid. Just stand still and watch the Lord rescue you today… The Lord Himself will fight for you. Just stay calm.” — Exodus 14:13-14
Then, God parted the Red Sea, making a way where there was no way.
What This Means for Us Today
No matter what trial you are facing, remember:
- God is with you – His presence never leaves you.
- You can trust Him – His promises always come to pass.
- There is joy even in trials – Growth happens in the struggle.
- Fix your eyes on Jesus – He will give you peace in the storm.
If God said it, He will do it. Hold onto His promises, because nothing is impossible for Him!
