In the heart of the ancient temple was the Holy of Holies, a place so sacred that only the high priest could enter—and only once a year on the Day of Atonement. It was the dwelling place of God’s presence, guarded by strict rituals and a thick veil that symbolized the separation between God and man. Every measure was taken to ensure this holy space remained untainted, a solemn reminder of humanity’s sin and the holiness of God.
But then came the cross. When Jesus gave His life, the veil of the temple was torn from top to bottom, a divine declaration that the barrier between God and humanity had been removed. No longer would God dwell in a temple made by human hands. Paul proclaims this truth in 1 Corinthians 3:16: “Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?” Now, through Christ, God’s presence resides within us. This profound truth sets the stage for what it means to dwell in the secret place of the Most High.
What Is the Secret Place?
Psalm 91:1 beautifully invites us: “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” The secret place is not a physical location but a mindset—an inner sanctuary within us where God’s presence dwells. It is sacred, not everything gets to enter. Worry, offense, bitterness, and fear may swirl around us, but they have no place in this holy refuge.
The secret place is where we find peace, rest, faith, and hope. It’s the space where we remember that no matter what happens around us, God is in control. But if we allow worry, fear, or offense to take over, this space becomes contaminated. Proverbs 4:23 reminds us: “Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.” What we allow into our hearts shapes our lives, impacting our relationships, attitudes, and joy. Guard your secret place fiercely, for it is the wellspring of your life.
Dwelling in the Secret Place During Trouble
Life isn’t without trouble. Jesus Himself said in John 16:33: “In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” Dwelling in the secret place doesn’t shield us from challenges but offers a refuge in the midst of them. It’s a decision to abide in His peace, choosing faith over fear and trust over panic.
Philippians 4:6-7 encourages us: “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” His peace is a fortress around your secret place, guarding your heart from the chaos of life. Pastor Lee’s words resonate deeply: “It’s okay to feel and process emotion, but you don’t have to change your address and move there.” Acknowledge your feelings, but choose to dwell in the promises of God rather than camping out in fear or worry.

Under the Shadow of the Almighty
To abide under the shadow of the Almighty is to remain close to Him—so close that His presence literally covers you. Shadows can sometimes feel dark, but they only exist where there is light. If life feels overwhelming, it’s not because God is distant but because He is so near that His shadow envelops you.
Imagine standing under the vast shadow of a tree on a scorching day. The sun’s intensity doesn’t disappear, but the shadow shields you from its full impact. Similarly, God’s shadow offers refuge and relief. Psalm 91:4 paints this picture: “He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge.” Like a mother bird sheltering her chicks, God protects those who stay close to Him. To experience this covering, we must remain near Him through prayer, trust, and dwelling in His Word.
The Promises of Psalm 91
Psalm 91 is a powerful declaration of God’s faithfulness to those who dwell in His secret place. Each promise is written in the future tense, reminding us that God’s work is ongoing. These aren’t mere possibilities; they are firm assurances of what God will do. Let’s explore them:
- God is our refuge and fortress (Psalm 91:2): He is our safe haven where we can trust completely.
- He rescues us from danger (Psalm 91:3): Deliverance from traps and harm, both seen and unseen.
- He covers us with His wings (Psalm 91:4): Tender protection and truth that shields us.
- He removes fear (Psalm 91:5-6): Courage to face hidden dangers and visible threats.
- He protects us in chaos (Psalm 91:7): Even when destruction surrounds us, His care remains.
- He commands His angels to guard us (Psalm 91:11-12): Divine assistance in every step we take.
- He offers salvation and satisfaction (Psalm 91:14-16): Deliverance, fulfillment, and the ultimate gift of eternal life.
These promises remind us of God’s faithfulness and invite us to trust Him fully. They call us to remain close, to dwell in His secret place, and to abide under His shadow.
A Final Challenge
Where do you dwell? Do distractions, fear, or offense take up residence in your heart, or are you guarding your secret place? God is inviting you into deeper intimacy with Him, to dwell in the safety of His presence and live in the fullness of His promises.
Take time this week to meditate on Psalm 91. Let its words remind you of God’s peace, power, and protection. Choose to stay close to Him, abide in His shadow, and trust in His unfailing love. No matter what comes, He is with you, He is for you, and His promises never fail.
